Scotoma is restrict region of loss of vision which is surrounded by a field of normal vision. In scintillating scotoma the patient sees jagged zig-zag lines that shimmer in place of what is really there. Testing with each eye separately tells if a scotoma is monocular (which would mean eye or optic nerve damage) or binocular/Homonymous, which would imply a central origin. See Blind Spot.
