Homonymous hemianopia, or homonymous hemianopsia, would technically mean a total loss of a whole visual hemifield (left or right) in both eyes. In practice it can sometimes mean a loss of vision in the same part of a visual hemifield in both eyes that spares part of the hemifield, although that should be called a homonymous scotoma or homonymous visual field defect. . Regardless of the extent of the visual field deficit, homonymous indicates that the problem is central to the optic chiasm.
