Homonymous visual field defects are a loss of the same region of space regardless of which eye is being tested. In general lesions central to the optic chiasm will cause homonymous deficits whereas disease or damage in one eye on damage to one optic nerve would cause monocular deficits [the term “heteronymous” hemianopia is not much used].
