Bitemporal hemianopsia (or Bitemporal hemianopia) means that vision is missing in the monocular (far temporal) region of both the right and left visual field. Upon testing with each eye separately it may be found that each eye alone is hemianopic in most or all of the ipsilateral hemifield. This condition is usually associated with damage of the optic chiasm, the area where the optic nerves from the right and left eyes cross above the pituitary gland; in fact, Bitemporal hemianopsia most commonly occurs as a result of pituitary tumors compressing the optic chiasm.
