A small lens-shaped nucleus lying beneath the thalamus just above the substantia nigra and just medial to the bottom of the internal capsule. It is usually considered part of the basal ganglia system because it has strong reciprocal connectivity with the globus pallidus, but anatomically it is in the subthalamus which is one of the 4 parts of the diencephalon.
