The SNpc is the posterior zone of the SN. SNc appears black (in fresh or fixed tissue slices) because its closely packed cells contain melanin granules; these cells synthesize dopamine and project to the neostriatum. Loss of SNc dopamine cells underlies Parkinson’s Disease.
