In the brainstem there are 3 additional or special types of functions associated with the cranial nerve nuclei; special somatic afferents (SSA: vestibular and cochlear nuclei), special visceral (branchial) efferents (SVE: trigeminal motor, facial, and ambiguus nuclei) and special visceral afferents (SVA: taste in rostral nucleus solitarius).
