The Septal region is a bilateral area of gray matter found at the bottom of the anterior horn of the lateral ventricle, rostral to the hypothalamus and superior to the anterior perforated area. It is part of the limbic system and receives inputs from the hippocampus via the fornix and from the amygdala via the stria terminalis. Different nuclei in the septal area are distinguished; e.g., Nuclei of the medial septal region provide cholinergic input to the hippocampus and may be active in modulating its memory functions.
