The medial most neocortical gyrus of the inferior temporal lobe, it is bordered ventrally by the collateral sulcus which separates it from the adjacent fusiform gyrus. This gyrus engulfs the hippocampus/ hippocampal formation. It contains the entorhinal cortex which borders the subiculum and is the major input for the hippocampus. It also contains the Parahippocampal Place Area (PPA) [whereas the neighboring fusiform gyrus contains the Fusiform Face Area (FFA)].
