After crossing at the optic chiasm, the optic nerve (composed of retinal ganglion cell axons) is termed the optic tract. Its principal targets are the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus, but many fibers also continue to synapse in the superior colliculus of the midbrain tectum.
