Olfactory receptor neurons are bipolar and ciliated. Their cell body is located in the olfactory epithelium, their apical dendrites extend into the olfactory mucosa below and extrude multiple cilia with different receptors for odorant molecules. Their thin unmyelinated axons form the olfactory nerve, and extend superiorly through the cribriform plate to terminate in glomeruli of the olfactory bulb.
