Each olfactory nerve is a collection about 3 million sensory nerve fibers that extend from the olfactory epithelium through the sieve-like cribriform plate (in about 20 separate bundles) to reach the olfactory bulb where they synapse in the glomeruli of the olfactory bulb. The olfactory nerve is by far the shortest of the twelve cranial nerves and we never saw it in the lab.
