The olfactory epithelium lies on the roof of the nasal cavity and has 3 types of cells: olfactory receptor neurons, supporting cells, and basal cells. The basal cells are stem cells capable of division and differentiation into either olfactory receptor neurons or supporting cells; see Olfactory Receptor Neuron, Neurogenesis below.
