Primary olfactory cortex is the target of the olfactory tract. Most (2nd order olfactory axons) take the lateral olfactory stria to synapse in the medial temporal lobe in the region of the uncus (Brodmann’s area 27). “Piriform” (or pyriform) cortex is another synonym for primary olfactory cortex. The lateral olfactory area is another term used and allows inclusion the medial amygdala nuclei that also receive inputs from the lateral olfactory stria. A small number of tract fibers take the medial olfactory stria (instead of the lateral) and then synapse in the anterior perforated substance and adjacent midline areas.
