The olfactory cortex is the cortical target of efferents from the olfactory tract. Olfactory cortex is located in the anterior ventromedial temporal lobe and consists of the uncus, the anterior parahippocampal gyrus, and the cortical amygdala. It is primitive, 3 layer cortex, and collectively called Piriform cortex. Olfactory cortex is unique among cortical sensory areas in that it receives direct sensory input from secondary sensory neurons (in this case the mitral and tufted neurons of the olfactory bulb) without an associated relay nucleus in the thalamus.
