Most nerve fibers in the spinal cord tracts are covered with a shiny white myelin sheath; this is what makes White Matter appear white; however, most spinal cord (and brain) sections shown in this course have the myelin darkly stained and consequently the ‘white’ matter is much darker than the relatively unstained gray matter which has a much sparser investment of myelinated axons.
