Mitral and tufted cells are the two types of principal cells in the olfactory bulb. Their dendrites receive olfactory nerve inputs via the olfactory glomeruli; thus they are the 2nd order sensory neuron for olfaction. Axons of mitral and tufted cells leave the bulb to form the olfactory tract and then most take the lateral olfactory stria and proceed to the olfactory cortex in the anterior medial temporal lobe.
