MD is the large medially located thalamic nucleus medial to the internal medullary lamina (IML). MD is reciprocally connected with prefrontal cortex (PFC). MD has 2 divisions: a medial division (MDm) and a lateral division (MDp). MDm and MDp are described below. Unfortunately, MD is as often as not called the dorsomedial nucleus (DM) instead (e.g. by Haines), so DM==MD.
