The lumbar cistern refers to the subarachnoid space in the lower lumbar spinal canal. This cistern is an enlargement of the subarachnoid space where the conus medullaris terminates at the level of L2 and continues down to S2. This cistern contains the cauda equina nerves and is the target of lumbar punctures.
