According to Blumenfeld the limbic system’s functions are Olfaction, Memory, Emotions (including drives and motivation), and Homeostasis (H.O.M.E. if rearranged). Anatomically, it encompasses a diverse set of interconnected cortical areas (cingulate, entorhinal, piriform, ventromedial frontal, anterior insula) and subcortical structures (hippocampus, amygdala, hypothalamus, habenula, nucleus accumbens, septal area/basal forebrain). It also includes parts of the dorsal thalamus (e.g., anterior nucleus and mediodorsal nucleus) and parts of the brainstem reticular formation..
