The ascending tract of fibers in the brainstem that carries auditory information to the inferior colliculus (this tract is found in the rostral pons and caudal midbrain, always “lateral” to larger medial lemniscus carrying somatosensory information). The lateral lemniscus has 2nd order auditory fibers coming directly from the contralateral cochlear nuclei and 3rd order auditory fibers from the superior olivary nuclei that carry binaural signals relating to the spatial location of sounds.
