The hippocampus proper is broken into 4 parallel strips (CA stands for cornu Ammonis, Latin for “Ammon’s horn”, an archaic name for the hippocampus). CA1 is the outermost strip, adjacent to the subiculum, CA4 is the innermost strip next to the dentate gyrus.
