The hippocampus is the central strip of the hippocampal formation (see below). Sometimes the term hippocampus is used to refer to the whole hippocampal formation (Dentate + Hippocampus + Subiculum), and sometimes just to refer to the hippocampus proper + the dentate gyrus. To avoid this confusion the hippocampus is often called hippocampus proper.
