Gray matter refers to the regions of the spinal cord containing neurons. White matter refers to the regions of the spinal cord containing ascending and descending fiber pathways, or tracts. In the spinal cord the White matter is on the outside (next to the pia) and the gray matter is central [In the brain proper this is reversed and gray matter is outermost].
