The GP lies between the putamen and the thalamus and is the principal output structure of the basal ganglia. An abundance of myelinated fibers gives this nucleus its characteristic pale appearance (globus pallidus is Latin for pale globe). Archaic names include paleostriatum and dorsal pallidum.
