This region of frontal cortex (Brodmann’s area 8), lies just anterior to premotor cortex, and directs voluntary movements of the eyes. It triggers saccadic eye movements via its corticonuclear projections to the superior colliculus and to pontine reticular formation near the abducens nucleus; however, neither this nor any cortex projects directly to the oculomotor nuclei of nerves 3,4, & 6 (See Fig. 8-15 in Haines).
