The three special coverings of both the spinal cord (and the brain proper), which are collectively called the meninges. The dura is the tough outermost covering, next to the spinal vertebrae (or skull in the brain). The delicate pia is the innermost covering, immediately adjacent to the neural tissue of the cord, and the arachnoid layer is interposed between the dura and pia.
