The cerebral cortex is an inhomogeneous structure and can be divided into distinct areas on the basis of their different cellular architecture (cytoarchitecture). These different areas are the functional units of the cerebral cortex and receive inputs from specific cortical and subcortical structures, analyze the activity in their various inputs and transmit their output to other cortical or subcortical areas.
