Together these comprise the posterior funiculus; a faint sulcus on the surface separates the medially located gracile fasciculus from the laterally located cuneate fasciculus. The gracile fasciculus carries ascending somatosensory information from the lower limbs (gracile ~ grass) and the cuneate fasciculus carries information from the upper limbs, and hence is absent below the cervical segments.
