The tubercles are paired bumps on the dorsal surface of the medulla caused by the underlying nuclei which are the destination of the cuneate and gracile fasciculi. Relay neurons inside these nuclei send somatosensory information up to the thalamus via the lemniscal pathways in the brainstem.
