A closed space or reservoir made up of enlarged subarachnoid spaces surrounding areas of the brain and spinal cord and containing cerebrospinal fluid, i.e. the interpeduncular, quadrigeminal, cerebromedullary (cistern magna) prepontine and lumbar cisterns.
