The massive bundles of corticofugal nerves forming the anterior surface of the midbrain on each side of the midline; the Cerebral peduncles a composed of corticopontine, corticobulbar & corticospinal fibers. Also called the Crus Cerebri or Basis Pedunculi. The space between the two peduncles is the interpeduncular fossa and is the location of the interpeduncular cistern. Also, CN 3 (oculomotor) emerges from the interpeduncular space.
