The cerebellum is covered with a layered cortex much like the cerebrum. Cerebellar cortex has 3 layers: 1) the Granular cell layer lies next to the white matter, 2) the Purkinje cell layer is in the middle, and 3) at the surface is the molecular layer where the axonal processes of the Granule cells (parallel fibers) synapse on the dendritic trees of the Purkinje cells. Three classes of inhibitory interneurons, namely Golgi, Stellate, and Basket cells, are also found, but in relatively small numbers.
