The calcarine sulcus runs horizontally across the medial surface of the occipital lobe, separating the cuneus gyrus (above) from the lingual gyrus below. Most importantly, The calcarine sulcus is where the primary visual cortex is located, with most of the upper and lower visual field representations buried in the lower and upper banks of the calcarine respectively. The central visual field is located in posterior portion of the calcarine sulcus and extends onto the occipital pole; the far peripheral visual field is in the anterior portion of the calcarine.
