Ascending tracts in the lateral and posterior spinal funiculi carry somatosensory information up to the brain proper. The principal ascending tracts are the fasciculus cuneatus and fasciculus gracilis in the posterior funiculus and the anterolateral (spinothalamic) and spinocerebellar tracts in the lateral funiculus.
