The anterior olfactory nucleus is nestled inside the olfactory tract. Cells in this nucleus receive inputs from the principal olfactory tract fibers (axons of the mitral and tufted cells of the bulb). However, the outputs of the anterior olfactory nucleus do not target olfactory cortex; instead, they follow the medial olfactory stria, then cross the midline in the anterior commissure, and eventually terminate on interneurons in the contralateral olfactory bulb, probably to inhibit the its principal cells.
