The innermost layer of the membranes enclosing the brain, spinal cord, and nerves of the cauda equina. It closely adheres to the surfaces of the brain and spinal cord including the tissue surfaces in the sulci and fissures. The pia contains the blood vessels for the nervous tissue. Spinal pia mater becomes the filum terminale at the end of the spinal cord and forms the denticulate ligaments.
