The striatum is caudate and putamen together. In lower animals the striatum is a single structure, but in primates the striatum is split by fibers of internal capsule into the caudate and putamen, which nevertheless possess identical cytoarchitecture and patterns of connectivity. Note that the ventral striatum, which includes the nucleus accumbens, is usually considered part of the limbic system (Lab 8).
