This visceral motor nucleus lies just medial-posterior to the larger somatic motor region of the oculomotor nucleus III. The Edinger-Westphal is a part of the parasympathetic system and supplies preganglionic fibers that innervate the ciliary ganglion and thereby contract the ciliary muscles of accommodation, and also the iris sphincter muscle (pupillary constriction).
