The surface landmarks at the base of the hypothalamus are used to subdivide the hypothalamus into 4 regions: preoptic (rostral to the optic chiasm), supraoptic (above the chiasm), tuberal (above the hypophysis), and mammillary regions. Furthermore, each region can be subdivided into medial and lateral nuclei, the medial-lateral division is roughly at the position of the fornix.
