This columnar motor nucleus is located on the midline of the medulla, extending caudally into the closed medulla and rostrally nearly to the ponto-medullary junction. Its axons form the 12th cranial which exits between the olive and pyramids and innervates the muscles of the tongue on the ipsilateral side.
