The red nucleus is a large spherical nucleus in the rostral midbrain tegmentum, just anterior to the superior colliculus. It is a principal motor nucleus of the midbrain and gives rise to the rubrospinal tract which extends to all spinal levels. It receives inputs from the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum and is a major input to the inferior olive, the sole source of the climbing fiber inputs to the cerebellum.
